The Shepard Family

The Shepard Family

Kevin Shepard was a graduate of the criminal justice program at Jefferson Community College. Created in 2001, The Kevin M. Shepard Memorial Scholarship was established by Kevin’s mother, Beverly Shepard, and his brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Janice Shepard. It is intended for a criminal justice student who desires to help others and the community the way Kevin did.

Kevin Michael Shepard, the son of Beverly A. Shepard and the late Harry P. Shepard, was born on January 17, 1973, in Watertown. He graduated from Immaculate Heart Central High School in 1991, and from Jefferson Community College in 1993. Kevin went on to complete his education, receiving a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from SUNY Brockport in 1995.

During his school years, Kevin was employed at Cheney True Value, and later, he was self-employed until he joined the Watertown Police Department in July of 2000.

Kevin was always ready to assist those who needed help, going out of his way for “the underdog” and those less fortunate in order to help them better their situation. He had a great love for family and friends, a wonderful sense of humor, and a passion for hockey. He especially loved the time spent at the family cottage on the St. Lawrence River, capturing as many sunsets as possible.

Kevin died on August 30, 2001, but his memory and spirit for helping others lives on in many ways, including through this scholarship.

The Jefferson Community College Foundation is grateful to Beverly Shepard and Brian and Janice Shepard, Kevin’s mother and brother and sister-in-law, for having established this scholarship.
