Sydney and Eva Hart Swartwout Sweet
In recognition of their son’s patriotism, the parents of Verne A. Sweet established a scholarship in their son’s name. The scholarship is a long-standing one, dating back to 1960. Mr. Sweet’s father and mother were the late Sydney Sweet and Eva Hart Swartwout Sweet.
Providing financial support to students attending Jefferson Community College, recipients must take courses leading to an associate in science degree and be a resident of Theresa, New York. Also, scholarship recipients must show academic achievement and prove financial need.
Verne A. Sweet was born in 1890. No record indicates the day and month of his birth, and little is known of his early life. A patriot who fought for his country, he served in the United States military during World War I. As a result of his military service, he developed heart disease. He died June 26, 1920, at the age of 30.
The Jefferson Community College Foundation is grateful to Sydney Sweet and Eva Hart Swartwout Sweet for establishing this scholarship.
