Lori Moseley Family and Friends

Established in 2013, The Lori L. Moseley Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in order to assist a non-traditional student going into the teaching field who also has financial need.

Born on July 26, 1964 in Watertown, New York, Lori M. Moseley was the oldest of three children of Kenneth and Linda Moseley of Great Bend, New York. She graduated from Carthage Central High School in 1982 and married Denis Rhubart in 1984. Together they had two daughters, Bethany (Hazard) and Danielle Rhubart.

In an effort to provide a better life for her family, Lori later decided to go back to school to pursue a degree in education. She graduated from Jefferson Community College in 1992, before attending and graduating from SUNY Oswego with a Bachelor’s degree in 1994. With a full-time job and family to support, she simultaneously completed coursework to achieve her Master’s degree from SUNY Potsdam in 1997.

In 1995, Lori began teaching for the Carthage Central School District as an elementary teacher. In her 16 years with the district, Lori played a versatile and integral role in students’ lives. During her career, she was a Reading Recovery Specialist and she also taught kindergarten, first, second, and fifth grade. Lori was passionate about teaching and saw the potential in each of her students. Her dedication to her students was unending and she worked tirelessly to help them succeed. In addition to teaching, Lori also served on a variety of school committees and was Lead Teacher at West Carthage Elementary for several years. Lori embodied exemplary teaching where students were the focus and teachers and administrators worked together as a community to create a positive learning environment. Lori strived to help each child reach their full potential and succeed in life. This enthusiasm inspired her to begin Administrative coursework in 2010.

In addition to teaching, Lori’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was a phenomenal mother whose strength and love were an inspiration to others. The apple of Lori’s eye was her sweet granddaughter with whom she taught to laugh and enjoy life’s precious moments. Lori also enjoyed gardening, going to the beach, kayaking, and spending time with her family. Her smile and laugh were contagious. Lori brought joy to those around her and made each person she talked to feel valued and important. She always had an ear to listen, a heart to give, and hands to help. Without intending to, Lori inspired those around her.

In June 2012, Lori was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Despite a long and grueling road, Lori kept a positive attitude and persevered through six rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. In September of 2013, she passed away at the age of 49. Lori experienced many challenges in her life. Yet, she kept a positive attitude, continued to give to those around her, and worked hard to overcome obstacles.

In memory of this amazing and selfless grammie, mother, daughter, sister, friend, teacher, and community member, Lori’s family has established a memorial scholarship in her honor. With contributions from family, friends and community members whose lives were touched by Lori’s life, the award will go to a non-traditional student enrolled at Jefferson Community College. It is through this memorial scholarship that Lori can continue to have a positive impact on others.

Jefferson Community College Foundation is honored and thankful to Lori’s family and friends for establishing this scholarship in her memory. Her dedication to education and changing lives continues through this gracious scholarship.
