John Wagenaar
John Wagenaar created this scholarship in memory of his wife Maria when she passed away. John and Maria both received RN degrees in the Netherlands. John earned dual degrees in both psychiatric nursing and general nursing. Maria was a Pediatrics Supervisor RN in Holland. They immigrated to the US in 1958 with only $200 in their pockets. They had a ten month old baby and Maria was pregnant with their second child. John worked at Mercy Hospital in Watertown as a Central Supply Nurse and later as an Operating Room Nurse. The Wagenaar children all graduated from Carthage Central High School.
Impact
The Maria and John Wagenaar Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a traditional, full-time student who in majoring in Nursing. They must be a Carthage Central High School graduate, have financial need and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.
